About Sutton In Ashfield
The town was recorded as far back as 1086 and was referred to as "Sutone". It is said that the De Sutton family gave land and the church to the area, so Sutton in Ashfield was born.
As the largest town in the district, Sutton In Ashfield is just four miles west of Mansfield and 12 miles north of Nottingham. With a population of 48,500 residents, the town is a thriving Nottinghamshire gem.
The Sutton In Ashfield Community
In the town centre (next to the sundial), Portland Square is home to a bustling outdoor market, popular with local vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, textiles and fabrics and other favoured items.
Adjacent to the famous sundial sits Idlewells Shopping Centre and Sutton Community Academy. Close by, the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society runs The Sherwood Observatory, located on the B6139 road. With several parks, schools, community and leisure centres, shopping districts, international cuisine, and pubs dotted around the area, there is plenty to enjoy in Sutton in Ashfield.
