About Mansfield
In the 19th Century, the population of Mansfield grew significantly due to its coal mining and hosiery industry development. The large royal charter market town of Mansfield lies in the Maun Valley, 12 miles north of Nottingham and has a population of approximately 77,551. Another interesting fact about the area - the incredibly distinctive red and white sandstone quarried near the town was used to build the Houses of Parliament at Westminster.
The Mansfield Community
If you are in the area, visiting Sherwood Pines is a must-see. The renowned forest was made famous by the folktale of Robin Hood and is awash with activity trails, play areas, bike hires, wild running, mountain climbing and, of course, The Major Oak. Additionally, paying homage to Mansfields' coal mining roots is Pleasley Colliery, a prominent historical spot in the area with a visitors centre and cafe. In addition, there are many museums, churches, leisure activities and a bustling high street full of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. With so much to enjoy, it's obvious to see why so many are interested in living or visiting the town.
