Ashton Under Lyne was home to the notable figure John Dalton. Referred to as the father of modern chemistry, Dalton was best known for introducing atomic theory to chemistry. He also conducted much research into colour blindness, which he suffered from. Today, in many languages, colour blindness is called ‘Daltonism’, a nod to his work in the field.

About Ashton under Lyne

Ashton under Lyne is a town in Greater Manchester and the largest of the nine municipalities that make up Thameside. It is located approximately 10 miles east of Manchester city centre, served by the M60 and the A6 Road, which runs through its centre. It lies on the undulating ground on the south bank of the River Tame, 7.2 miles east of Manchester city centre, 5 miles south of Oldham and 9.5 miles north-west of Stockport.

The town has a population of 76,800 and, with its economy built on cotton spinning, flourished until the mid-19th century. Then, it was overtaken by newer industries such as coal mining and rail manufacturing; however, the fall of these trades caused sharp unemployment in the area. Over the years, these industries were replaced by new businesses and modern services in retail, technology and finance. As a result, Ashton under Lyne has one of the highest job densities outside London, with more than three jobs per hectare.

The town has four main shopping areas: Market Street (the main thoroughfare), Bridge Street (the financial district), Old Market Street (the historical core) and Portwood Road (the retail centre). There is plenty to do in Ashton, from visiting the market halls or exploring the local heritage museum. You can also participate in one of the many community projects or events in the area.
